Making the leap from a second-class lower to graduating with top-class honours is a remarkable achievement that many students only dream of. It's a journey fraught with challenges, late-night study sessions, and relentless dedication. Often, students lament about the elusive "first class" as if it were an unattainable treasure buried deep within the academic landscape. However, my friend Abdussalam’s story serves as proof that with the right mindset, strategies, and unwavering determination, the path to first-class honours can be paved, even from humble beginnings.
In this newsletter, we will unravel the secrets and explore the steps and strategies to help any student bridge the gap from a lower-class degree to a first-class honours distinction. Also, welcome to our first edition of the education series at Kaatib Newsletter.
Earning a first-class degree demands unwavering commitment, consistent effort, and, most importantly, self-belief. As I often emphasize, entering university marks the point where mere wishes for high grades must be supplanted by earnest, diligent work.
While I hesitate to invoke the notion of luck, it is undeniable that effort plays a pivotal role in achieving a rewarding outcome. It's my conviction that many individuals possess the potential to graduate with first-class honours if they only grasp what study methods suit them best.
The establishment of a personalized study routine aligned with your unique learning style is a pivotal step toward success. The duration it takes you to complete a chapter or comprehend complex material is irrelevant. What truly matters is staying true to yourself and embracing the methods that resonate with you.
A friend of mine aptly summed up the strategies for achieving top grades during a recent phone conversation, underscoring their simplicity:
Be Aware Of Your Academic Standing
Especially if you're in your freshman (100L) or sophomore (200L) years. While it may seem like a cliché, knowing how to calculate your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is an essential step towards achieving your academic goals. At the end of your academic journey, your CGPA will play a defining role in determining the classification of your degree, including the coveted first-class distinction.
Calculating your CGPA allows you to:
Track Progress: It provides a real-time snapshot of your academic performance, helping you monitor your progress throughout your university journey.
Set Goals: Knowing your current CGPA enables you to set realistic goals for improvement and work towards achieving your desired degree classification.
Identify Weaknesses: By understanding the components of your CGPA, you can identify specific courses or areas where you may need to invest more effort or seek additional support.
Stay Motivated: Seeing the impact of your hard work on your CGPA can be a powerful motivator to maintain consistent academic excellence.
Visualize Your Academic Journey.
Mentally calculate the expected grades for all the courses you are yet to undertake. This exercise will provide you with a projected outcome. Then, engage in a "what-if analysis." Ask yourself, "What if I don't achieve 'A' grades in some courses? How will it impact my overall results?" Keep a close eye on the cumulative impact, as it will be instrumental in your pursuit of academic excellence.
Don't Be Deterred by Others' Stories:
Refrain from being swayed by the tales of how certain lecturers are known for not awarding the highest scores in their exams. These anecdotes should not cloud your vision of the bigger picture. Maintain unwavering belief in your ability to excel and make a difference. Just because others may not consistently earn "A's" does not dictate that your academic journey will follow the same pattern. Your determination and commitment can pave the way for outstanding achievements.
Maintain Focus and Consistency:
Remember that even if you don't graduate with a first-class degree, strive for a robust second class upper that can set you apart and open doors for your career beyond the university. It's important to understand that while grades are significant and can create opportunities, they do not guarantee success in life. Focusing on achieving the best results you can is admirable, but not achieving the highest grade should not be viewed as a failure. Instead, consider it as closing a chapter in your life, knowing that there are still remarkable opportunities and accomplishments awaiting you in the future. Success is not solely determined by grades, but also by your determination, skills, and perseverance.
Work Your Way Up, Not Down:
You have had a bad result recently? Refuse to it haunt you. Keep your gaze firmly fixed on the grander objective. Your ultimate aim is to graduate with a first-class degree, and that is the singular focus. Anything that falls short of this specific goal should not distract or deter you. Remember that your academic journey is a path to growth and improvement, and the pursuit of excellence is a journey filled with opportunities for progress. Stay resolute, and as you work diligently toward your goal, you'll find yourself moving steadily in the direction of your aspirations.
Thats all. Don’t forget to stay focused, stay consistent, and keep your eye on the prize. Your determination will lead you to greatness, and your academic journey will shape you into a resilient, adaptable, and successful individual.
