You Can Build Out of Nothing
Whatever you perceive as your "nothing" right now, acknowledge it
It is weekend and I have decided to write this. How is the cold over there? My fingers are chilled but I just have to write this now at 07:51 am.
So, what do we have?
One of the most brilliant minds of our time, Stephen Hawking, faced a fate that would have crushed most people. At the age of 21, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating disease that gradually paralyzed him, affecting his speech, muscles, and movement. Doctors gave him only a few years to live, predicting that his body would deteriorate quickly. Yet despite the physical limitations imposed by this disease, Hawking went on to change the world.
He became a world-renowned theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and best-selling author. His groundbreaking work on black holes, time, and the nature of the universe has left an enduring legacy. Hawking's mind transcended his body’s limitations, showing that no matter how severe the constraints, the human spirit and intellect can rise above.
Stephen Hawking’s story is a powerful reminder that no matter the odds, no matter how little we think we have, we can build out of nothing. And so can you.
We all experience moments in life when we feel like we have nothing. It may be a lack of resources, opportunities, support, or even health. Having nothing doesn’t mean you’re without value or potential.
Hawking didn’t let his diagnosis define him or his capabilities. He embraced his limitations and found a way to work within them, pushing the boundaries of knowledge. His ALS didn’t rob him of his mind—it simply changed how he approached his work.
Whatever you perceive as your "nothing" right now, acknowledge it. It could be financial challenges, personal hardships, or uncertainty in your career. But don’t let it stop you. In fact, let it be the starting point from which you build something new.
The mind is the most powerful tool we have. Hawking lost the ability to move most of his body and to speak without assistance. However, his mind remained sharp, and it was through sheer mental focus and determination that he continued to make groundbreaking discoveries.
When we’re feeling stuck or facing obstacles, we tend to focus on what we can’t do. What truly matters is what we can do. Our minds, our creativity, and our ability to learn, adapt, and think critically can help us build solutions even when everything else feels lost.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
What skills, talents, or passions do I have?
How can I use my mind to create solutions to my challenges?
You may not have all the resources you wish for, but your mind is limitless in its capacity to create, innovate, and problem-solve.
Start Where You Are, With What You Have
Building out of nothing isn’t about waiting for the perfect time, resources, or circumstances. It’s about starting with what you have, even if it seems like very little. Hawking didn’t wait for his physical health to improve—he took the tools at his disposal and made them work for him.
With the help of a speech-generating device, he continued to communicate, write, and lecture, sharing his brilliance with the world. Instead of giving up because of what he lacked, he focused on the tools and support available to him and made incredible strides.
You can do the same. Maybe you don’t have the ideal job, finances, or environment, but what can you do with what you have right now? Even the smallest step forward, taken consistently, can lead to monumental progress.
Embrace Your Unique Perspective
Your life experiences—no matter how difficult—give you a unique perspective. What you perceive as limitations can actually be the catalyst for innovative thinking and unique contributions. Embracing your challenges and viewing them as opportunities for growth will help you open yourself up to new ways of thinking and creating.
Consider how your unique experiences and hardships can be a source of strength rather than weakness. Often, the most profound breakthroughs come from the most challenging moments.
Perseverance is Key
One of the most inspiring aspects of Stephen Hawking’s journey was his relentless perseverance. He didn’t let the slow progression of ALS slow his pursuit of knowledge. He kept working, writing, and discovering until the very end of his life. His legacy is a testament to what can be achieved through perseverance.
Building something from nothing takes time. It requires patience, grit, and resilience. There will be setbacks, moments of doubt, and times when it seems like nothing is working. But success doesn’t come from having everything—it comes from refusing to give up. Like Hawking, keep pushing forward, even when the road is difficult.
Ask yourself:
How can I practice perseverance in my current situation?
What small actions can I take every day to build momentum?
Remember, progress is often slow, but it’s progress nonetheless.
Your Story Matters
Hawking’s story touched millions not just because of his scientific genius, but because of his resilience and determination to thrive despite immense physical challenges. His life shows that your story, your journey, and your persistence can inspire others.
No matter how small or insignificant you may feel, your journey has the potential to impact the lives of others. Every step you take toward building something from nothing is a step that someone else might look at and find hope in.
Embracing your challenges, persisting through the tough times, and building from what little you have will help you create a story that can inspire others to do the same. Your struggles can become a source of strength not only for you but for the people around you.
If Stephen Hawking’s life teaches us anything, it’s that we can rise above even the most difficult circumstances. It’s not about what we don’t have—it’s about what we do with what we have. Whether it’s an idea, a talent, a skill, or simply a passion for learning and growth, you have the tools you need to build something meaningful.
You may not see the full picture yet, and it may feel like you have little to work with, but remember: every great achievement starts with a single step. Take that step today, knowing that you are capable of building out of nothing.
Let me run to class. I have lectures by 08:30
